Banana Palm — Stairwell Mural

Scroll the story
01

Chapter 1 of 5

Painting the Architecture

A mural for a domestic stairwell — the kind of wall that is passed rather than paused at. The composition is built to be read in motion, from below and while climbing.

02

Chapter 2 of 5

The Terracotta Arch

A painted terracotta arch anchors the piece, giving the palm a frame and lifting it off the grey wall. Without it the greens would sink into the surrounding paint.

03

Chapter 3 of 5

Leaf by Leaf

Banana leaves are painted individually, each with its own vein structure and torn edge. The variation is what stops a repeated form from reading as wallpaper.

04

Chapter 4 of 5

Working Vertically

A stairwell offers no comfortable working position. The piece is painted in sections from a ladder, stepping back constantly to check proportion.

Chapter 5 of 5

Permanent Work

Unlike canvas, a mural cannot be moved, resold, or reframed. It belongs to the building.
